Transpetro moves into road transport fuelled with renewables

Petrobras subsidiary Transpetro is entering the road transport sector.

Best-known for its tanker vessel operations to ship Brazil’s crude oil, Transpetro is investing R$43 million (€7 million) and buying 33 road tankers powered by Diesel R to transport more than 50,000 tonnes of fuel a month around the South American giant.

The road tanker service is scheduled to start operating in January 2027.

The fleet will be fuelled with Diesel R, a fuel developed by Petrobras with renewable content from vegetable oils or animal fat.

The operational management will be with Budel Transportes, a company specialised in fuel logistics, in partnership with Transpetro.

The first two routes are in the South Region and should transport more than 50,000 tonnes a month of bunker and fuel oil, under contract with Petrobras. In Paraná, the trucks will connect the Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (Repar), in Araucária, to the Paranaguá Terminal (Tepar), with 36,000 tonnes a month.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the route will connect the Alberto Pasqualini Refinery (Refap) to the Niterói Terminal (Tenit), in Canoas, with 18,000 tonnes a month.

“The new transport mode will be used especially in connection with the logistics assets of the Petrobras system and last-mile service,” Transpetro president Sergio Bacci said.

The company is also preparing its debut in inland navigation, with barges acquired for bunker transport. The first operations will be in Rio de Janeiro, with the service also offered in Santos (SP), Belém (PA), Paranaguá (PR) and Rio Grande (RS).
