Cosmo Oil advances bioethanol‑derived SAF production in Japan

Cosmo Oil has announced that its bioethanol‑derived Alcohol‑to‑Jet (ATJ) SAF project has been selected for a FY2024 subsidy by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

The project, developed with Mitsui & Co., aims to establish a domestic SAF supply chain, combining Cosmo’s refining and logistics expertise with Mitsui’s ethanol procurement capabilities.

The initiative supports Japan’s wider decarbonisation strategy and responds to rising global SAF demand.

The company highlights that current SAF production is dominated by HEFA pathways overseas, making this AtJ‑based domestic project strategically important for Japan’s energy security and emissions reduction goals.
