Sasol achieves product sustainability certification
Sasol has reached a major milestone in South Africa’s energy and industrial transition, with Natref becoming the first refinery in Africa to achieve product sustainability certification for key fuels production pathways, alongside certified sustainable chemicals production at Secunda Operations.

The milestone follows the successful completion of an International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC+) final onsite audit by TÜV SÜD, a leading provider of testing, inspection and certification.

The certification covers the production of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel through used cooking oil and vegetable oil co‑processing at Natref.

Sarushen Pillay, Sasol executive vice-president: business building, strategy and technology, said the certification reflects a shift from ambition to delivery.

He said: “This milestone demonstrates that Sasol can deliver certified sustainable fuels and chemicals at scale using existing assets in South Africa. Independent certification strengthens confidence in our transition strategy, our operating capability and our ability to compete in global low carbon markets.”

The certification strengthens Sasol’s readiness to supply certified fuels and chemicals into domestic, premium and export markets, while reinforcing Natref and Secunda’s role in supporting certified sustainable production across the value chain.

“Certification enables access to markets and supports credible sustainability claims by ensuring products are independently verified,” Pillay added.

Walter Reithmaier, CEO of TÜV SÜD´s industry & infrastructure division, added: "Globally recognised certification schemes like ISCC PLUS, combined with impartial audits conducted by independent third parties like TÜV SÜD, are essential to demonstrate the sustainability, traceability and greenhouse gas reduction of products and processes.”
