Japanese sake and liquor maker Oenon Holdings will start making ethanol at the nation’s largest biofuel plant this year using rice imported by the government.

An ethanol tank explosion at Bartow Ethanol Florida has led to the plant being closed until further investigation.
The explosion was in a 50,000-gallon tank that contained about 1,000 gallons of ethanol, says David Wyant, a spokesman for the Bartow Police Department.

New York State-based Buffalo Biodiesel has completed the expansion of its processing facilities, increasing its capacity from 1 to 5 million gallons of biodiesel annually.
By doing so the subsidiary of alternative energy company HydroGenetics has increased its production capacity by 500%.

In the US the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2009, or H.R. 1105, has been signed into law, pumping millions into biofuels projects.
The $410 billion (€315 billion) legislative package contains appropriations bills that were not completed in the 110th congress.

A report published by the UN's World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) has warned that the sharp increase in biofuel production has impact significantly on water demand.
According to the UN World Water Development Report 3 production of ethanol stood at 77 billion litres in 2008 and should reach 127 billion litres by 2017.

Operations have begun at Acciona Biocombustibles biodiesel plant in the Port of Bilbao at a cost of €25 million.
The plant is the second such facility owned by the company in Spain and will produce 200,000 tonnes of biodiesel a year, making a 27% contribution to the target figure for the production of biodiesel in Spain for 2009.
