WTO tells EU to change tariffs on Indonesian biofuel

Indonesia introduced the case to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2014, a year after the anti-dumping taxes on Indonesia and Argentina were introduced.

The EU’s taxes were a reaction to what they saw as the unfairly low prices (also known as ‘dumping’) of the two countries’ biofuel exports. According to Reuters, Indonesia and Argentina called the tariffs ‘protectionist’.

The WTO panel handling the case told the EU that it needed to bring its policies into line with WTO agreements. The ruling was made public 25 January. The panel did not make any specific recommendations on how the EU should amend its measures. The parties have 60 days to appeal the decision.

Argentina has previously won a case against the EU’s duties, resulting in a cut in import tariffs from 22-25.7% to between 4.5%-8.1%.
