World Energy announces temporary closure of three biodiesel plants

Boston, US-based low-carbon fuel supplier World Energy has announced that three of its biodiesel facilities in North America will be shut down temporarily, following the latest round of refinery exemptions.

The company issued a statement announcing its intention to ‘immediately cease production and furlough employees’ at its facilities in Natchez, Mississippi; Rome, Georgia; and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

“World Energy will maintain essential staffing at these facilities to support maintenance and safety operations to keep the plants in a warm shutdown mode pending improved market conditions,” the statement said.

According to local reports, the company said the three closures come after the latest decision by the US Environmental Protection Agency to grant 31 small refinery exemptions to oil companies under the Renewable Fuel Standard.

The issuing of waivers to larger oil companies is reducing the demand for biodiesel, World Energy officials noted. The company added that it will keep essential staff at each of the three facilities to support maintenance and safety operations, with the hope of reopening the plants if market conditions improve.

Normal operations will continue at World Energy’s refineries in Hamilton, Ontario; Houston, Texas; and Paramount, California.
