Washington State Ferries commits to 10% biodiesel blend

Washington State Ferries (WSF)announced that it will be launching a Sustainability Action Plan that outlines objectives for more renewable ferries and terminals, which includes a commitment to using a 10% biodiesel mix.

According to the release, the plan includes initiatives to protect orca whales, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality and reduce waste.

“Because we operate our 23 ferries on Puget Sound and manage 20 terminals on its shores, we have an obligation to ensure WSF is doing everything we can to protect our environment,” said WSF assistant secretary Amy Scarton.

“This plan lays out our commitment to tackle these issues and continue our efforts to make Washington’s ferry system the greenest in the world.”

WSF claims that it is the largest consumer of diesel fuel in Washington state, burning over 18 million gallons each year.

“WSF will use a 10 percent blend of biodiesel (B10) fleetwide. This is an increase in use of biofuels from the current 5 percent blend (B5) fleetwide,” WSF states in the plan.
