Sweden’s Södra earmarks €1.9 million for sustainable transport solutions

Swedish forest-owner association Södra announced that it has set aside SEK 20 million (€1.9 million) to cover additional costs related to the development of new, sustainable transport solutions.

The investment will be used to help the cooperative achieve its fossil-free transportation targets by 2030. This target was set in 2016 alongside 14 other sustainability goals.

“As a player in the green economy, we want to help drive the change to a fossil-free society,” said Henrik Brodin, project manager for the company’s ‘A Fossil-Free Södra’ business, in a 2017 press release. “Our operations can offer so many social benefits in the transition to a bioeconomy, which is why we are continuously seeking opportunities to deliver tomorrow’s solutions.”

Södra has previously committed to investing in liquid biofuel production through its joint ventures SunPine and Silva Green Fuel, as well as by producing its own biomethanol.

“As one of Sweden’s largest transport purchasers, we have a major responsibility,” said Lars Idermark, president and CEO. “We want to show the way to a sustainable transport future and this investment will show that we are very serious about achieving change, and inspiring others to follow our lead.”
