Progress in the biofuels industry towards a more efficient and sustainable future demands the deployment of innovative strategies and collaboration with key partners that can guide this process in a coherent and effective way.
Tomsa Destil is a Spanish company with over 170 years of experience providing engineering solutions worldwide for the alcohol and biofuels industry.
The company specialises in extraction, fermentation, distillation and waste management processes and it has vast experience, resources and expertise to help partners on this path of evolution and innovation towards a greener future.
Scope and supply
Tomsa Destil’s value proposition relies on the delivery of projects with solid guarantees, positioning itself as an integral partner capable of managing the entire supply chain.
This allows it to execute large-scale projects with an operational flexibility that ensures adaptability to the specific conditions of each job, as well as rigorous compliance with the client’s objectives.
The scope of the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor begins with the conception of the engineering.
Its technical team, located in Madrid, Spain, tailors each phase of the project, from preliminary engineering, focused on the evaluation of technical and economic feasibility, to detailed engineering, where the final specifications and definitive values for the complete development of the project are set.
Tomsa Destil covers a wide range of disciplines, including process/chemical, mechanical, civil, structural, electrical, environmental and other engineering.
The company has more than 7,200 square metres in the Spanish capital dedicated to the manufacture of process equipment under European or international standards, depending on the requirements of the project.
These comply with regulations such as ASME, API, ADE MERKDLATT and the European Directive, among others.
The company has supplied technology and engineering expertise in 48 countries on the five continents during the last 30 years.

It has executed more than 700 successful projects, always ensuring the highest standards of technology, quality and safety.
This has allowed the company to acquire vast knowledge in the management of logistic processes, adapting to diverse legislations and operation codes, which enhances the optimal development of the project.
Its scope continues with the assembly and supervision of the work until the commissioning of it, meeting the established objectives, deadlines and efficiency levels.
The impact of Spanish engineering goes beyond its EPC supply – the company is highly committed to the innovation and development of the sector, motivated by the constant search for the best technology for its clients.
From its research and development centre in Madrid, Tomsa Destil has registered numerous patents This is from the result of a multidisciplinary team comprised of biologists, engineers, chemists and pharmacists.
These groups carry out continuous research in key areas such as the sustainability of processes in the biofuels industry and the improvement of the production of biochemicals, including 2G ethanol, methanol, PBS, lactic acid and oils, among others, in the alcohol production process.
Flagship projects
Tomsa Destil has been and continues to be a strategic supplier of EPC engineering solutions for the main alcohol producers in the world, with a network of respected clients.
The level of satisfaction and performance of Tomsa Destil’s work can be evaluated by its clients. Below are some of the company’s flagship projects.
600,000 LAPD in Thailand. Tomsa Destil supplied in EPC mode a biofuels plant in western Thailand with a capacity of 600,000 litres of alcohol per day to produce dehydrated alcohol (99.99%v/v) from sugar cane derivatives.
The plant includes the following process sections – HTM, mash preparation, fermentation, dehydration, distillation, evaporation, stillage concentration, cooling tower, storage, CPU and control room, prioritising the efficiency of each process through energy efficiency and waste management at the end of the production chain for the generation of valuable by-products.
In addition to its successful execution, this project stands out for being developed under adverse circumstances due to the pandemic, demonstrating the commitment of Tomsa Destil and its team with the fulfillment of the client’s objectives.
350,000 LAPD in Bolivia. Tomsa Destil executed an EPC distillery in Bolivia to produce 350,000 litres of alcohol per day at 96% v/v from fermented sugarcane at 10% v/v, which is subsequently transformed into biofuel at the sugar mill facilities in the region as a use of the waste generated from sugar production, thereby generating valuable by-products.
350,000 LAPD in Mexico. 950 tons of corn and 350,000 litres of alcohol per day from corn are produced at the bioethanol plant supplied by Tomsa Destil in north-west Mexico. The facility, executed under EPC modality, comprises the mash preparation, fermentation, distillation, dehydration, vinasse drying, cooling tower, water treatment, control room, and storage units.
This project has been a milestone in the North American country as one of the first plants dedicated solely to biofuel production in the region.
