Sekab demonstrates Celluapp technology in Finnish biorefinery

Swedish biofuels producer Sekab E-Technology has announced that a new biorefinery in Finland, Nordfuel, will open in 2021 using Sekab’s Celluapp technology.

The €150 million facility will produce bioethanol and biofuel from soft wood residues. The company’s Celluapp technology platform enables the extraction of cellulose sugars and lignin from forest or agricultural residues.

“To successfully tackle climate change, Europe will need all available bioethanol,” said Marlene Mörtsell, Celluapp technology manager at Sekab. “Softwood residues are among the most climate-friendly raw materials available, and using them for ethanol production is made possible through our technology Celluapp.”

Based in the Finnish town Haapavesi, Nordfuel will operate as a full-scale biorefinery, producing bioethanol and biogas for the transport sector, as well as lignin to fuel the power plant and manure.

Once operational, Nordfuel, which is owned by Kanteleen Voima, will be the largest biogas production facility in the Nordic region.

”For us, there was never any doubt about who would become our technology provider for this project,” said Teija Mäyrä, head of technology at Kanteleen Voima. “The Celluapp technology is world-leading, and Sekab has extensive experience in producing bioethanol from softwood residue.”
