Renewable jet fuel at Paris Air Show ‘a success’
Renewable products business Amyris and fuel brand Total completed a new demonstration flight at the Paris Air Show using a technology that converts plant sugars into renewable jet fuel.
The Airbus A321 aircraft, powered by two Snecma CFM56 jet engines, flew from Toulouse to Paris on the fuel blend and represented the second flight from this project after an Embraer E195 jet flew a year ago.
‘Today's flight is another step closer in achieving ASTM certification, which paves the way for the commercialisation of our renewable jet fuel,’ says Amyris CEO John Melo.
‘The air transport sector has an ambitious target to drastically reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 while commercial flights and demand for jet fuel will steadily grow,’ adds Philippe Boisseau, president of marketing, services and new energies at Total. ‘To that end, biofuels will play an important role along with improved aircraft energy efficiency.’
