Pertamina launches nationwide B50 biodiesel distribution across Indonesia

Indonesia’s state-owned energy company, Pertamina Patra Niaga, has begun the nationwide distribution of B50 biodiesel, marking a major milestone in the country’s drive towards greater energy independence and reduced reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The rollout follows a government mandate requiring diesel fuel to contain a 50 per cent blend of palm oil-based biodiesel, making Indonesia the first country in the world to implement a B50 programme on a national scale.

The programme officially commenced on 1 July, with Pertamina initially preparing 29 of its 126 fuel terminals to distribute the new fuel blend.

The company plans to expand operations progressively during a three-month transition period, allowing suppliers to run down existing stocks of B40 biodiesel before full implementation.

According to Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, all major industrial sectors have been prepared for the transition.

Extensive compatibility tests have been conducted across a range of applications, including heavy machinery, mining equipment, locomotives and marine vessels, to ensure the fuel meets operational requirements.

The government views the B50 mandate as a cornerstone of President Prabowo Subianto’s ambition to achieve greater energy self-sufficiency within the next few years.

Officials estimate that the programme could significantly cut diesel imports, improve the nation’s trade balance and strengthen resilience against fluctuations in global oil markets.

Beyond energy security, the initiative is expected to deliver environmental and economic benefits.

The Indonesian government projects that B50 could reduce greenhouse gas emissions substantially while supporting domestic palm oil producers and creating employment opportunities across the supply chain. Nationwide distribution at all filling stations is targeted by 1 October.
