Peregrine Energy invest in biomass-fuelled cogeneration plant

Energy consulting firm Peregrine Energy announced its plan to develop a new woody biomass-fuelled cogeneration plant at Sonoco's manufacturing complex in Hartsville South Carolina.

The company will invest €100 million for the project. The construction of the plant is scheduled to begin once the air permit is issued and the company expects the facility to be commercially operational by autumn of 2012.

The new 50-megawatt facility with a capacity to generate enough electricity to power approximately 14,000 homes, would replace Sonoco's existing coal-fired boilers.

The proposed facility is expected to be constructed on a 12 to 15-acre site within the Sonoco complex and also use emission control technologies that meet BACT or Best Achievable Control Technology standards.
