Nanaimo looks forward to first large scale biodiesel pumps

The first large scale biodiesel pumps in Nanaimo, Canada will be set up next year for people to use in modified vehicles.

The Nanaimo Recycling Exchange (NRE) will offer the service in participation with Cowichan Energy Alternative (CEA).

Spokesman for CEA, Mark Turcotte, said: ‘The NRE will recycle the used vegetable oil that is collected from Nanaimo's homes and businesses into biodiesel and dispense it to those who have joined the co-op at a gas station-type facility that will be set up on the NRE's property on Kenworth Street’.

At $1.22 (€ 0.83) per litre the biodiesel is slightly more expensive than regular petrol.

The biodiesel will be dispensed by a solar powered hose system and will be stored in a 6,500-litre tank.
