MOL Group marks major progress in SAF production
MOL Group has announced a significant advance in its transition towards low‑carbon fuels, completing a new round of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) production tests at INA’s Rijeka Refinery.

The pilot project successfully processed 5% palm oil mill effluent (POME) alongside fossil feedstocks, yielding both SAF and renewable diesel.

The trial involved 1,000 tonnes of biogenic material and was independently certified under the ISCC sustainability standard, underscoring the company’s commitment to verified renewable fuel production.

This marks the second successful SAF and HVO test within the MOL Group, following earlier work at the Slovnaft Bratislava refinery, where cashew nut shell oil and used cooking oil were co‑processed with crude oil.

The results confirm that existing refinery units designed for conventional aviation kerosene can be adapted to produce SAF, supporting the EU’s climate targets and strengthening regional energy security.

The company emphasises that renewable fuels are central to its long‑term SHAPE TOMORROW strategy.

By integrating biogenic feedstocks directly into refinery operations, MOL Group aims to reduce lifecycle emissions from transport fuels while scaling technologies needed for Europe’s broader decarbonisation ambitions.
