EPA announces 2011 RFS

In the US, 13.95 billion gallons of biofuels must be blended with conventional fossil-based transport fuels by next year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS2) requirements for 2011.

Of this renewable fuel, 0.78% (1.35 billion gallons) of it will be made up of advanced biofuel, 0.69% (800 million gallons) of biomass-based diesel and 0.003% (6.6 million gallons) will derive from cellulosic biofuel.

In the 2007 RFS the EPA called for an ambitious 250 million gallons of cellulosic biofuel to be used. However the RFS2 is a 97% decrease of this original target.

Speaking about the huge reduction of cellulose biofuels Bob Dinneen, president and CEO of the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) said: ‘The RFS was designed in part to ensure the evolution of America’s biofuels industry is successful. By reducing the standard for cellulosic biofuels EPA is accurately reflecting the difficulties cellulosic biofuel technologies have encountered in obtaining the capital needed to fully commercialise. However, being aware of this fact, EPA should have been and must be careful to keep cellulosic biofuel targets ambitious so as to stimulate the kind of investment these technologies need to finish commercialisation.’
