Argentinian firm to produce biodiesel from sewage waste

Explora has invested over $5 million (€4.1 million) in new technology to turn sewage waste into biodiesel.
The plant in Puerto General San Martín, Santa Fe, Argentina, has already produced 12,000 tonnes of deacidified residual oil that has been exported to the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Bulgaria and Brazil.
This is used as an advanced biofuel for speciality chemical applications and as a feedstock for the production of second generation biodiesel.
"At our company, we develop the technology to energetically take advantage of the high acidity fat that can be recovered from sewage sludge to produce advanced biofuels and lower the costs of waste treatments, " said Axel Boerr, vice president of Explora, as reported in La Nacion.
“We proposed to the authorities to take advantage of the sewage effluents to generate foreign exchange for the export of the biofuel that is generated and, at the same time, to reduce the costs for the treatment of these wastes. In addition, the whole process reduces up to 90% of greenhouse gas) emissions.”
