POET breaks ground on major bioethanol expansion

POET breaks ground on major bioethanol expansion
POET has officially broken ground on a major expansion of its Shelbyville, Indiana bioethanol facility, a project that will nearly double production capacity and create significant new demand for locally grown corn.

The company describes the investment as a major step in strengthening domestic renewable fuel supply and supporting rural economies.

Once completed, the plant’s bioethanol output will increase from 98 million gallons to 193 million gallons annually. Production of distillers grains and corn oil will also double, while approximately 25 additional full-time jobs are expected to be created.

POET believes the project will generate demand for an additional 32 million bushels of corn each year, providing farmers with a larger domestic market at a time when agricultural commodity prices remain under pressure. Company executives highlighted the role of biofuels in strengthening energy security while expanding opportunities for agricultural producers.

The expansion forms part of POET’s broader strategy to meet rising demand for bioethanol, bioproducts and higher ethanol blends such as E15. It is also expected to position the facility for emerging opportunities linked to carbon capture and other low-carbon technologies.  Construction began in March 2026 and completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2027. When operational, the enlarged plant will strengthen Indiana’s role within the US bioeconomy while supporting employment, agricultural demand and renewable fuel production.
