Biofuels gain momentum as shipping sector accelerates low‑carbon transition
The global shipping industry is entering a decisive phase in its shift toward low‑carbon fuels, with biofuels emerging as one of the most practical and immediately deployable solutions.

At the Biofuels in Shipping seminar in Istanbul, Arkas Bunker and DB Tarımsal Enerji highlighted how domestic production capacity, certified supply chains, and real‑world operational experience are positioning Türkiye as a potential regional hub for sustainable marine fuels.

Speakers emphasised that the fuel transition is no longer driven solely by environmental concerns. Carbon regulations from the IMO and the EU are reshaping freight costs, route planning, customer preferences, and exporters’ competitiveness.

As one excerpt from the seminar noted, “the carbon intensity of fuel will become a key determinant not only of vessel operations, but also of freight costs, route planning, cargo owners’ preferences, and exporters’ competitiveness.”

DB Tarımsal Enerji showcased its model of converting waste vegetable oils collected in Türkiye into certified marine biofuel, achieving emission reductions of up to 93.7%.

Arkas Bunker reported more than 60 successful bunkering operations across 32 vessel types, supplying over 15,000 tonnes of biofuel and reducing emissions by 14,500 tonnes.

“Our biofuel infrastructure is ready, our products are ready, and the regulatory framework is in place,” the company stated.
