Renewable diesel plant opens in Baton Rouge

A $160 million (€116.3 million) biofuel plant, located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, US, is now operational.

Owned by Tyson Foods and fuel manufacturer Syntroleum Corp., Dynamic Fuels has been designed to produce 75 million gallons of renewable diesel a year from leftovers from Tyson’s meat-processing factories and eateries, including chicken fat, beef tallow and grease.

'Our US plant is producing some of the highest quality diesel fuel in the world, and best of all, it is renewable with a carbon footprint 75% below that of petroleum diesel,' said Gary Roth, CEO of Syntroleum.

Construction on the plant, which employs 44 full time staff and 13 part time workers, started back in August 2008 and it was originally planned to open in August this year.

The majority of the interest for the renewable diesel comes from those companies required by federal law to blend their conventional diesel with renewable fuel. Although the two firms refused to name buyers due to confidentiality agreements, the U.S Air Force has confirmed that it is to purchase approximately 40,000 gallons for testing the fuel for potential use in planes.

To date the renewable diesel produced at the Baton Rouge facility is registered with the Environmental Protection Agency for use in cars and trucks, however has not been certified for use in planes.

However both companies highlight that the operations at the refinery will not last long if the Congress does not award them a significant tax break.

Jeff Webster, VP of the Tyson group, believes that ‘the whole green fuels industry in the US is going to go down,’ is the tax break is not extended.
