Million mark hit by US biodiesel producer

US-based Greenleaf Biofuels produced its one millionth gallon of biodiesel at the end of October this year.

The milestone came since commercial production at its New Haven Terminal location in Connecticut began in the summer.

The fuel will primarily be blended into the region’s heating oil supply enabling consumers to heat their homes and businesses with a product which has been shown to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 88%, the company claims.

‘Connecticut is proving resilient in finding new economic drivers that support manufacturing jobs in our state, while at the same time supporting our national policy of increasing the supply of domestically produced renewable fuels,’ says senator Chris Murphy. ‘Greenleaf is an example of a public-private partnership that delivers on the promise of economic growth and policy objectives.’

Greenleaf primarily uses reclaimed and waste vegetable oil from restaurants and food manufacturers to make its biodiesel at the 10 million gallon per year facility, which is located by the New Haven harbour.
