Enerkem receives C$15 million investment

MSW to waste biofuel producer Enerkem has received investment from Waste Management and EB Investments to the tune of C$15 million (€11 million), in return for a minority equity interest in Enerkem Alberta.

The biofuels company is currently building a full-scale commercial plant in Edmonton, Canada, and has so far raised C$103 million to put towards the development.

Other investors include Alberta Innovates - Energy and Environment Solutions, the City of Edmonton and Alberta Energy, that have collectively invested C$23.35 million in financial support.

The facility will uses waste that would normally be delivered to the City of Edmonton’s landfill, to produce the biofuels.

Enerkem uses thermochemical technology to convert MSW, including textiles, plastics, fibres, wood and other non-recyclable waste, into syngas and then into methanol and ethanol.

The company also has plans to build other similar facilities in the US and Canada.
