Biofuels gain European support

A special Eurobarometer report released by the European Commission has revealed that 72% of the public support biofuels across the EU27, with 83% public approval for sustainable biofuels.

The report, commissioned to test public opinion on biotechnology, concludes that Europeans believe that the use of biofuels should be widely encouraged.

‘This strong public support for biofuels is a very important message that policy makers and some NGOs cannot ignore,’ Rob Vierhout, ePURE’s Secretary General, comments.

‘The claim by some NGOs that the public is concerned about biofuels is a fairy tale. If there were any doubts in their minds, the answer is clear: the people want biofuels and they want biofuels now.’

‘Discussions on topics such as land use change should not be used to limit the growth of European produced biofuels. Biofuels are vital as they can immediately reduce carbon emissions in European transport and contribute to domestic energy security,’ he adds.
