The European Commission has approved the proposed creation of a biobutanol production technology joint venture between BP Biofuels and US chemical manufacturer DuPont, resulting in a dual takeover of US company Biobutanol LLC.

BP Biofuels, a subsidiary of UK energy giant BP, and US agri-tech company DuPont have formed Butamax Advanced Biofuels to accelerate biobutanol commercialisation.

US-based biofuels developer BioEnergy International has formed Myriant Technologies (Myriant) to incorporate all of its biobased chemicals business and intellectual property.

The first bioenergy research centre has been opened in the Chinese city of Nanning, in southern Guangxi Zhuang’s Autonomous Region.

Independent oil firm Eastern Petroleum plans to set up a $30 million (€21.5 million) ethanol plant in Isabela, the Philippines, next year.
