An Air New Zealand passenger jet powered in part by vegetable oil successfully completed a two-hour flight on Tuesday 30 December.
One engine of a Boeing 747-400 aeroplane was powered by a 50-50 blend of oil from jatropha plants and standard A1 jet fuel.
The flight was the first to use jatropha as part of a biofuel mix.

Brazil’s ethanol sales for 2008 are accelerating past petrol sales for the first time, the National Petroleum Agency reports.
The figures take into account sales of hydrated ethanol that can be used in its pure form in most cars in Brazil, and not anhydrous ethanol that is used just to blend with petrol, the agency says.

The European Union (EU) has granted £5 million (€5.1 million) to a Scotland, UK-led project to develop marine-based biofuels.

The car manufacturer also targets a cut in carbon dioxide emissions from its range by 40% within three years.

The US Department of Energy (DoE) is making available up to $200 million (€140 million) for advanced biofuel pilot refineries.
The funds could be awarded to up to 12 projects over the next six years.

Poet Biorefining - Laddonia, Missouri is undergoing a $2 million (€1.4 million) expansion that will increase the plant’s capacity and provide a larger market for locally produced corn.
