Helius Energy to produce biodiesel from whisky waste
Pot ale is a high-protein liquid removed from malt whisky immediately before the final distillation of the spirit. CoRD is a cooperative of Speyside whisky producers, including the Chivas Brothers and Diageo, set up specifically to make economic use of this.
The £50 million (€58 million) joint venture, Helius CoRDe, will process the pot ale into fuel for a CHP plant and two high-protein solid residues – a fertiliser and an animal feed, both of which will be used by local farmers.
The project was awarded the ‘Best Environmental Initiative Award’ at the Scottish Green Energy Awards 2008. Helius CoRDe anticipates that EPC contracts will be awarded shortly, allowing construction to begin in early 2010, with around two years for construction and building, which is likely to generate between 20 and 100 jobs.
