Canada’s 2% biodiesel law proves unpopular

While a 2% biodiesel mandate might seem like a positive plan for today’s environment, Canada’s representative for commercial vehicle owners Canadian Trucking Alliance (CTA) is urging the government in Ottawa, Canada, to abandon the law.

When the mandate comes into force in 2011, all diesel must be blended with 2% biodiesel.

However according to the president of CTA David Bradley: ‘There is little to be gained from a biodiesel mandate. The impetus for such a policy is really to create a new market for farmers.’

Bradley referred to an independent study carried out by Environment Canada, which states that between 2011 and 2035 the 2% biodiesel law will cost the industry approximately C$4.5 billion (€3.4 billion). During the same time frame only C$862 million will be made in carbon cutting fiscal rewards.

It is thought that the nation would benefit more from fuel-saving methods such as energy efficient vehicle engines, speed limiters and more aerodynamic truck designs.
