Biodiesel use for blending to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets dropped to a historic low of 90,800 tonnes in December 2024.
This compares to approximately 107,000 tonnes in November. According to the Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control (BAFA), the combined consumption of biodiesel and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) declined to around 2.1 million tonnes in 2024, a decrease of 20.6 %compared to the previous year.
The Union zur Förderung von Oel- und Proteinpflanzen has called on the new German government to abolish the double counting of biofuels derived from certain waste oils and fats listed in Annex IX Part A of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II).
UFOP has urged that this change be made as soon as possible as part of the upcoming amendment to the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).
