The US biodiesel market shrunk in 2014 following policy uncertainty in Washington that destabilised the industry and caused many biodiesel plants to shut down or reduce production.

On 14 January, Boeing and Embraer opened a joint sustainable aviation biofuel research center in a joint effort to further develop the aviation biofuel industry in Brazil.

A fire broke out on the 19 January at the Illinois River Energy plant in Rochelle, Ogle County, Illinois.
Emergency services responded to the fire and remained on the scene for a little over an hour.
The fire started in a grain room of the ethanol plant after corn had been burnt following an electrical fault.
No injuries were reported.

On 20 January, several fire crews responded to a fire at Big Rivers Resources' ethanol plant in Boyceville, Wisconsin, US.
Reports from the Boyceville Fire Department say that the fire was started by a bearing on a motor that caught fire in a duct. The plant was shut down and evacuated.

Firefighters in Greensboro, North Carolina, US, responded to a leaking tanker at a Ryder truck rental facility.
Approximately 2,000 gallons of ethanol spilled in an accident in south Greensboro, North Carolina.
A tanker filled with ethanol burst after the landing gear, which is used to keep the trailer upright when not hooked to a tractor gave way.
