PETRONAS, Enilive and Euglena finalise investment for biorefinery in Malaysia

news item image
PETRONAS, Enilive and Euglena have made a final investment decision to develop a biorefinery at PETRONAS’ Pengerang Integrated Complex in Johor, Malaysia.
Set to be operational by the second half of 2028, the biorefinery will produce Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and other biofuels.
The facility will process about 650,000 tonnes of raw materials annually, leveraging advanced Ecofining™ technology.
This project aims to support global aviation and transportation industries in reducing carbon footprints and meeting biofuel demand.
The biorefinery will produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and other biofuels like renewable diesel/hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) to meet the increasing demands of global aviation and transportation sectors.
Construction is set to commence in Q4 of this year, and the facility will process approximately 650,000 tonnes of raw materials annually, including used vegetable oils, animal fats, and other biomass sources.
Strategically positioned to leverage PETRONAS’ integrated facilities, the biorefinery will benefit from proximity to feedstock supply and access to international shipping routes. The facility will feature advanced Ecofining™ technology, developed by Eni and Honeywell UOP, allowing flexibility in processing various feedstocks and maximizing SAF production.
Ahmad Adly Alias, vice-president of refining, trading and marketing at PETRONAS, emphasised that this project enhances their role in the biofuels value chain and supports their Net Zero Carbon Emissions 2050 aspiration.
Stefano Ballista, CEO of Enilive, highlighted the project’s alignment with their 2030 biorefining targets and global expansion. Mitsuru Izumo, founder and president of Euglena, expressed the project’s significance in achieving a carbon-neutral society and expanding their microalgae research.
This biorefinery project marks a significant step in creating a sustainable bio-based ecosystem, promising a cleaner future for the ASEAN region and beyond.
