Deploy higher biodiesel blends now to lower fuel costs, urges EWABA
Europe, it argues, is running out of time to shield households and businesses from rising fuel and living costs. The solution, however, is already within reach: higher biodiesel blends.
Biodiesel produced from sustainable, largely waste‑based feedstocks is available today at industrial scale across Europe.
Yet outdated policy caps and regulatory barriers prevent its full deployment. EWABA stresses that this is no longer tenable.
With diesel underpinning the movement of food, medicines, construction materials and essential goods, any spike in fossil diesel prices quickly feeds inflation. Current market volatility is already placing significant strain on consumers and supply chains.
EWABA is calling for immediate, targeted policy action. This includes enabling higher biodiesel blends such as B10 for passenger vehicles and even higher levels for heavy‑duty transport; introducing temporary tax incentives to accelerate uptake; and removing unnecessary restrictions on sustainable feedstocks.
Increasing biodiesel’s share in the fuel mix would deliver rapid, tangible benefits: lower pump prices, reduced exposure to volatile fossil imports, and immediate greenhouse‑gas savings of up to 90% compared with fossil diesel.
It would also strengthen Europe’s waste‑based biodiesel sector, supporting more than 70 production facilities and around 25,000 jobs, while enhancing energy security through domestic fuel production.
