Certas Energy brings HVO to major low-carbon truck stop expansion

Certas Energy, the UK’s leading independent distributor of fuel and lubricants, has acquired the Watling Street truck stop in St Albans, marking the first phase of a major expansion of its national truck stop network — and a significant step forward for low-carbon fuel infrastructure.
The acquisition doubles Certas Energy’s truck stop portfolio and is backed by a planned £350,000 (€401,000) redevelopment to upgrade facilities, enhance security and introduce cleaner energy solutions.
Central to the upgrade will be the introduction of Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), offering HGV operators an immediate lower-carbon alternative to conventional diesel without the need for vehicle modifications.
As part of the wider sustainability programme, the site will also feature e-HGV charging infrastructure, solar power generation and Spotless Water facilities, helping to future-proof the location for the transition to low-emission freight transport.
Situated on the Strategic Road Network, Watling Street is a key freight hub serving vehicles travelling on the M1 motorway and M25 motorway — routes that collectively carry more than one billion tonnes of freight each year, more than any other roads or transport modes combined.
Mike Heaton, head of estate Development at Certas Energy, said: “Adding Watling Street to our national truck stop network marks an important milestone in our long-term strategy to invest in high-quality infrastructure that supports the comfort, safety and wellbeing of UK truck drivers.
“Our drivers help to keep the country moving, and we recognise the need for better services that allow them to rest and recover."
