Californian plant to reopen in mid 2010
During a meeting on January 15, the director of Buena Vista Biomass Power (BVBP) Jesus Arredondo said that the refinery could be latest provider of green electricity.
The company, having already invested $15 million, is aiming for the plant to reopen by the middle of 2010. It is thought that a further $25 million will be spent in order to convert the existing plant into a producer of sustainable, biomass-renewable energy.
According to Arredondo, this new biomass plant will generate 18MW of electricity through the process of burning around 210,000 tonnes of wood each year, enough to supply 16,000 homes with energy.
The wood comes from various sources, including urban demolition projects, sawdust and pallets from industrial utilities and forest materials that would have otherwise been burned or dumped in landfill sites.
‘What we’re trying to do with this facility is utilise what’s out in the forest,’ said Arredondo.
During the construction process more than 50 jobs will be created. When in full operation, the plant could employ up to 90 full-time workers.
