World’s largest biomethanol plant begins production

The construction of biomethanol producer BioMCN’s second generation biofuel plant has been completed and began operations on Friday 25 June.

Located in the city of Delfzijl, the Netherlands, BioMCN’s plant has the capacity to produce 250 million litres of biomethanol annually and is thought to be the largest in the world.

Rob Voncken, director at BioMCN, said: ‘There is a lot of demand, particularly because the fuel we make is produced sustainably.’

By 2020 the Netherlands will be required to blend a minimum of 10% biofuel into regular petrol. According to the company the new plant can meet this obligation on its own.

Biomethanol produces 78% less greenhouse gases than regular methanol.

BioMCN has patented the process that it uses to produce its biomethanol. The biofuel is made from crude glycerine, a sustainable by-product created from processing vegetable oil and animal fats.
