World’s first paddy rice-biofuel hits the pumps

Biofuel made from paddy rice is now being sold at a petrol station pump in Niigata, Japan.

The National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations Zennoh (JA Zennoh) began sales of the biofuel, a mixture of petrol and bioethanol made from rice for animal feed, on 17 July.

An annual ethanol production of about 1,000 kilolitres is expected from some 2,250 tonnes of brown rice grown in Niigata Prefecture, which will be blended with petrol at a ratio of up to 3%.

JA Zennoh is expecting annual sales of about 33,000 kilolitres of the biofuel.

JA Zennoh says the project will also promote effective usae of rice paddies that are left uncultivated due to the government's rice-reduction programme.

The bioethanol-blended petrol is equivalent to regular petrol both in quality and mileage, and will be available in a similar price range.
