WBI biofuel plant charged

Western Biodiesel, a biodiesel company based in Alberta, Canada, is facing charges under the Environmental Protection Act and the Waste Control Regulation following a number of offences.

Back in 2008 two incidents occurred at the facility where wastewater containing methanol and biodiesel was released onto nearby land.

As a result Western Biodiesel and the plant’s former operations manager Jason Freeman are both being charged.

Speaking about the legal action the president and CEO of WBI Dean Cockshutt said: ‘The US plant design engineers that commissioned the equipment told our operations manager… that a wastewater tank contained only distilled water and it was safe to release it to our yard to evaporate.’

The case will appear in Okotoks Provincial Court on 29 November.
