Wastewater from restaurants get biofuels treatment

A biofuels producer in Philadelphia, US has diversified its portfolio to include a new stream of business.

BlackGold Biofuels has opened a new facility that can recycle wastewater from restaurants and turn it into biofuel. The feedstock comes from grease trap waste from wastewater haulers which is then cleaned for further use.

Another bonus of this project, according to BB, is that the US EPA places blockages caused by grease waste high on the list of nationwide sewer overflows. By using the waste in this way BB is diverting it away from landfills.

'We are proud to provide an environmentally friendly solution for recycling this waste,' says Emily Landsburg, CEO of BB. 'We selected the region because we thought it would be a good place to do business, and the work of agencies like NC Department of Environment and Resources, Charlotte Mecklenburg Utility District, NC Department of Commerce, Charlotte Chamber and the NC Biofuels Centre confirmed that.'
