Vanguard Synfuels biodiesel plant reopens

In Pollock, Louisiana, US, a formerly defunct biodiesel plant has reopened.

The plant, which is owned by biodiesel producer Vanguard Synfuels, was officially opened on 8 August, although it began producing biodiesel a couple of weeks prior to this. The opening has created jobs for 25 people.

The plant originally opened as a biofuel facility in 2003 when it started producing biodiesel from soyabean oil. In 2007 it was forced to close, blaming rising costs. But the company found the support it needed from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development and secured $10.4 million (€7.3 million) in funding.

As John Broussard, USDA Rural Development's business and cooperative programme director, explains: 'They are taking waste that otherwise who knows where it would get disposed of and making fuel. They're not taking a food chain item and making fuel from it.'

Today the Vanguard Synfuels plant can manufacture biodiesel from a variety of waste sources, including used cooking oil, grease and tallow.
