USAF launches biofuel initiative

The US Air Force (USAF) is planning to test two types of biofuel for use in a 50-50 mix with jet fuel by 2013.

USAF will acquire more than 300,000 gallons of biofuels, building on initiatives under way at commercial airlines.

The Air Force will select about 160,000 gallons of each type of biofuel. The winning biofuels will be used for lab analysis, engine testing and flight-tests during the next two or three years.

Every $10 (€7) rise in the price of a barrel of oil is costing the Air Force $600 million.

A 50-50 blend of synthetic fuel was flight-tested on a B-52 in August 2007, followed by a C-17 in August 2008 and a B-1B a month later.

The Air Force wants half of its domestic aviation fuel to contain a 50% blend of alternative fuel by 2016.
