US ethanol production increases

Following its sixth annual report, the Federal Trade Commission has concluded that the ethanol market in the US lacks focus.

160 companies were found to be either producing the biofuels or likely to be producing it within the next 18 months. This figure was also stated in the 2009 report.

The nation’s largest ethanol manufacturer today makes 12% of the total US production capacity, up from 11% last year and the year before that. However, this figure is somewhat lower than the 16% listed between 2001 and 2007, and its 41% share in 2000.

Both US ethanol production and ethanol production capacity have increased, with production levels reaching 12.3 billion gallons this year – a 23% increase from the 10 billion gallons produced in 2009. This is 750% more than the 1.6 billion gallons in 2000.

Domestic ethanol production capacity, including capacity currently under construction, also rose. October 2010 saw it reach 15.2 billion gallons, up from the 14.5 billion gallons reported in October 2009.

Although the ethanol production capacity is sufficient to meet the current RFS mandates, the requirements could rise under the 2007 energy Independence and Security Act. The report highlighted that additional capacity is therefore necessary in order to meet these future mandates.
