UPM and Metropolia University create car using biomaterials

The majority of the Biofore Concept Car's parts, which would traditionally come from plastics, have been replaced with biomaterials.

UPM used materials to make up a number of the car's core components, and Metropolia University designed and manufactured the car, which 'has endless possibilities,' says Elisa Nilsson, Vice President of Brand and Communications at UPM.

UPM Grada thermoformable wood material was used to create the passenger compartment floor, centre console, display panel cover and door panels, while UPM Formi biocomposite makes up the front mask, side skirts, dashboard, door panels and interior panels of the car.

'Sustainability is a major subject globally. Already today, we have biomaterials that are a real alternative to traditional oil-based materials. These biomaterials are of high quality, durable and also offer new design opportunities,' says Pekka Hautala, Project Director from Metropolia University.
