UK looks to volcano power
It is the latest project from Bio Energy Investments, which will begin construction on a volcano-shaped biomass station in late 2010. It will produce energy and heat for more than 100,000 homes in the northeastern town Stockton-on-Tees.
The biomass station was designed to blend into the surrounding grasslands close to Middlehaven, a derelict former industrial area that is being regenerated.
Palm kernel shells, the waste from palm-oil plantations in Malaysia, will fuel the 279 foot high biomass plant, delivered by ship.
The plant's operations including fuel transportation from Malaysia would reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80% compared with running a coal-powered plant.
