Topsoe fuels China’s push for sustainable aviation fuel

Topsoe has been selected by Tangshan Jinlihai Biotechnology (Tangshan Jinlihai) to provide its Hydroflex® technology and related services for the Tangshan Jinlihai industrial hub, which will have a capacity of 300,000 tonnes of feedstock annually.

When the project is in full operation, Topsoe’s technology is expected to enable annual emission avoidance of approximately 700,000 metric tonnes of CO2e — the equivalent of avoiding the emissions from roughly two million passengers flying from Beijing to Copenhagen.

Yassir Ghiyati, Chief Commercial Officer at Topsoe, said: “We are delighted to announce our collaboration with Tangshan Jinlihai, a partnership that reflects our shared commitment to advancing sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel.

“By applying Topsoe’s proven technologies, we are enabling customers to move closer to their decarbonisation goals while supporting efforts to reduce emissions across both China and Europe, making the energy transition truly global.”

Aijun Li, Chairman of Tangshan Jinlihai, said: “Jinlihai and Topsoe have jointly launched the sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project, marking a crucial step forward for us in the strategic development of high-end green energy and the active implementation of new-quality productivity.

“The project will fully leverage the geographical and industrial advantages of the Caofeidian National Petrochemical Base, using waste oil as feedstock and Topsoe's globally leading technology to build a high-quality SAF production facility. This is not only a substantive measure for Jinlihai to extend its green industrial chain, but also an important step in responding to China’s 'dual carbon' strategy and promoting the low-carbon transformation of the aviation industry.”

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) projects that SAF production will more than double in 2025 compared with 2024, reaching 2.1 million tonnes (2.7 billion litres), equivalent to 0.7% of total global jet fuel production.

This agreement builds on Topsoe’s growing SAF presence in China and marks its sixth contract for SAF production in the country to date. Most recently, Topsoe was announced to provide technology, proprietary equipment, and catalysts to Zhongneng Yida New Energy Co., Ltd in May 2025; Zhejiang Jianglan Bio-Energy Technology Co. Ltd in April 2025; Chuangui New Energy Company in January 2025; and Guangxi Hongkun Biomass in April 2024.
