The UK’s green corner

While chemical businesses may be waning in Teesside, north east England, UK, a green light is shining bright.

Ensus has built a £300 million (€326 million) wheat-based bioethanol plant, whose by-products will be used to produce animal feed and carbon dioxide for the soft drinks industry. The plant could be ready by the end of Q4

One million tonnes of wheat will be brought in from Lincolnshire and the Scottish Borders.

From fuelling cars to fuelling homes, in near-by Billingham Gaia Power has won planning permission for a £200 million recycled wood burning 50MW power station. It will produce enough electricity to heat and power 80,000 homes.

These new projects have been encouraged by the government's intent to reduce carbon emissions by 15% by 2020. The rest of the UK may take need to take inspiration from the green beacon in the north.
