Summer sales of E15 in US increase by almost 50% in 2019

US ethanol association Growth Energy has announced that summer sales of E15, fuel blended with 15% ethanol, were up 46% year-on-year in 2019 on a per-store basis.

Moreover, for the first time, summer 2019 saw the number of stores offering E15, which is also known as Unleaded 88, increase. Led by Casey’s, the retail industry added 149 stores over the summer months.

This year’s summer driving season was the first summer in the US that Unleaded 88 was sold without restriction. The 46% increase underscored the popularity of the fuel with drivers, who have logged over 11 billion miles driving on the ethanol blend.

“Unleaded 88 provides American drivers unrivalled value at the fuel pump and the explosive growth in summer sales demonstrate what we’ve always known – once consumers have access to this engine-smart, earth-kind fuel they will come back again and again,” said Growth Energy CEO Emily Skor. “With summertime sales already up 46% over last summer, we expect to see interest from retailers and consumers alike continue to grow.”

Over 2,000 stations in the US currently offer drivers access to cleaner burning, high-octane Unleaded 88 fuel. Retailers including Casey’s, Kwik Trip and Thorntons sell 2.2-2.5 million gallons of fuel per year, which equates to over 200% more fuel gallons than the volume the average fuel retailer sells annually.
