Sudan set to introduce E10 at the pump

Kenana Sugar (KS) will launch the first Sudanese project which uses ethanol as a gasoline additive to increase octane and improve vehicle emissions.

The project, which will mix gasoline with 10% of ethanol, is a joint venture between KS and the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company (GNPOC). Sudan currently produces 65 million litres of ethanol, 10% of production consumed in the local market for making paints and detergents.

Mohamed El Mardi El-Tijani, KS MD, says biofuels do not require adjustments for car engines, adding that their cost is much lower than gasoline.

He also points out that ‘biofuels produced from mixing ethanol and gasoline has become a pressing global need’ and adds that its use in the European Union will most likely become binding ‘within a year’.

Sudan inaugurated its first ethanol plant in Kenana in 2009, located by the country’s main sugar factory.
