SkyNRG selects Topsoe technology for sustainable aviation fuel plant

Amsterdam-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producer SkyNRG has selected Haldor Topsoe’s HydroFlex™ technology for its planned renewable diesel and jet fuel facility at Delfzijl in the Netherlands.

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has committed to purchase 75,000 tonnes of SAJ per year over a ten-year peiod. The fuel will be supplied directly to aircraft at a local airport.

SkyNRG’s planned refinery is dedicated to producing renewable jet fuel and will be the first in Europe to produce certified SAJ.

“We are dedicated to make sustainable aviation fuel the new global standard, said Maarten van Dijk, executive director at SkyNRG. “For our DSL-01 project, we have selected Topsoe’s HydroFlex™ technology after a very thorough selection process. Topsoe has not spared cost and effort to work with us to prove that they can use our most difficult feedstock to yield excellent results.”

Compared to conventional jet fuel, SAF reduces carbon dioxide emissions by at least 85% and emits fewer hazardous particles and Sulphur than oil-baed jet fuel.

According to SkyNRG, the Delfzijl facility will use predominantly regional industrial waste streams as feedstock in the production of SAJ.

“We are very proud that a front-runner such as SkyNRG has chosen our HydroFlex™ technology for their first jet fuel refinery,” added Morten Schaldemose, executive vice-president at Haldor Topsoe. “We look forward to working together to show that flying can be more sustainable.”

Topsoe will act as licensor and supplier of basic engineering, proprietary equipment, catalyst and technical services.
