Shell sees a better future with biofuels
Shell is no longer in a position to contribute development in solar and wind power, say officials. The global energy company will now focus on next generation biofuel research, exploring new technologies such as algae, and cellulosic derived biofuels.
This change of direction came after considering algae’s ability to grow very rapidly, its richness in oil and capacity to be cultivated in seawater, but mostly it minimises the use of fertile land and fresh water.
‘For both energy security and a lower carbon dioxide future, biofuels are the clear short-term option to diversify transport fuels away from oil, and one of a small number of options in the long term,’ Graeme Sweeney, executive vice president, Future Fuels and CO2 says.
