Seattle seeks alternatives to soya-based biodiesel

US city Seattle is set to review its policy on using food crop-based biodiesel, such as soyabean, for its vehicles amid concerns of it being more evironmentally harmful than standard diesel.

Seattle's Fleets and Facilities Department director, Brenda Bauer, announced that the city has temporarily stopped purchasing soya-based biodiesel fuel and is testing biodiesel made from waste grease rather than food crops.
Policies involving crop-based biofuels are consistently criticised as doing more harm than good due to them being planted on land needed to grow crops as well as the level of greenhouse gas emissions involved.
Bauer added the food production byproducts used to create the grease-based biodiesel could also result in less local waste being placed in area landfills.
