Rise in EU biofuels consumption
European countries will increase solid biofuels imports to 50-80 million tonnes by 2020.
The news comes as the REScoop 20-20-20 project is expected to increase energy production from renewable sources to 20% in the European Union.
The project will be implemented as a result of the modernisation of a number of existing power generation facilities and through the conversion of power plants from coal to solid biofuels.
Drax Power Station, which converted its first unit to biofuels a year ago, with a capacity of 600 MW, is the first power plant in the UK to switch coal on wood pellets. Several other countries are building similar facilities.
The increase in biofuel consumption is predominantly seen in the UK, Denmark, Italy and Sweden.
